Particle filter

The particle filter is a filter in the exhaust system of the car and is also called the DPF filter. Soot particles are released during combustion in diesel engines. These soot particles are very bad for the environment and can have a negative impact on health when inhaled. Therefore, the soot particles are filtered out of the exhaust gases by the filter. This part is mandatory for cars with a diesel engine to meet the emission requirements. Since 2018, there are also various car models with petrol engines that use particle filters to prevent emissions.

The small soot particles that are filtered from the exhaust gases are stored in small chambers in the filter. You may imagine that the rooms will become full of soot particles over time. A pressure sensor sensor measures how full the filter chambers are. If the chambers are too full, the car's electrical system ensures that the temperature of the combustion gases is temporarily raised sharply. The temperature is then raised to about 600 degrees. This process is also known as regeneration. By regenerating the soot filter, the soot particles are burned and converted into ash. Because ash is very small, it can find its way out through the exhaust and there is again room in the particle filter.

Sometimes the particle filter cannot regenerate properly because, for example, only short distances are driven by car. When driving only short distances, the car cannot get warm enough to carry out the regeneration process. This can clog the filter. You can recognize a clogged filter by the malfunction light in the dashboard or a reduced power of the engine. Sometimes the particle filter can still be regenerated, but in most cases it will have to be cleaned or replaced.
