The car's thermostat works with a valve. This valve opens and closes constantly to regulate the temperature. Because the valve is constantly moving while driving, it will wear out or break over time. An overheated engine can occur if the thermostat valve remains closed. The coolant can no longer reach the engine. If the thermostat is left open because it is broken or exhausted, too much coolant will be pumped to the engine. A cold or overcooled engine is not running efficiently. This is reflected in remarkably high fuel consumption. Also, the heater in the car will no longer heat properly.
