Exhaust backbox
A rear silencer, also known as a muffler, an exhaust backbox, silencer of just exhaust silencer, is one of the last parts of the exhaust . When you look at the entire exhaust, the end silencer is attached to
the exhaust middle silencer . The silencer is mounted using nuts, bolts and springs.
In general an entire exhaust is attached to your car using rubbers.
The exhaust silencer makes sure that the noise
escaping from the engine is ´muted´, or ´silenced´, ´muffled´. Additionally,
the exhaust silencer also filters exhaust emissions from your car.
Symptoms of a failing exhaust backbox? There are a number of signs that may indicate that the exhaust backbox needs
to be replaced. Symptoms of a bad exhaust silencer are:
Engine is misfiring; Exhaust is louder than normal; Condensation from the exhaust pipes; Loss of engine power; Smoke from places other than the silencer; Please note that rust can occur in several places of
your exhaust, because of several causes. Think of exposure to salt, albeit from
roads during the winter or saltwater in communities near oceans, but other
causes are also possible. Such as frequent hits by speed bumps, low clearance
potholes, or other impact items, and excessive use or custom fabrication of
parts (which are not recommended by the manufacturer).
How to replace an exhaust backbox? Although a medium difficulty level, you certainly can replace a rear silencer
yourself. Always be sure though, to proceed with caution. Because of erosion, it
may be hard to disassemble the exhaust silencer. Especially eroded brackets are
often difficult to remove. If it proves to be really difficult we recommend
removing the silencer with a power tool, such as an angle grinder. Be careful
not to damage the other parts under your car though. Finally, got the silencer
removed? Assemble the new exhaust backbox to the middle silencer. Check if the
suspension rubbers are still in good condition, if these are not up to par,
then replace them as well.
Mount the silencer on the middle silencer with sealing
paste. Put sealing paste both on the exhaust silencer as well as on the fixing
points. Slide the parts over each other and attach the exhaust clamp. Please
note not to tighten them completely yet! Turn the silencer so that it does not
hang too tight in the suspension rubbers. Does the exhaust back box sits well?
Now you can tighten the clamps properly. The last step is to turn on your car
and let the engine warm-up. Do not give it any throttle though! Heating up the
exhaust system without putting any pressure on it, makes sure that the sealing
paste hardens and seals it off perfectly.
