Expansion vessel leaking

If the expansion tank is leaking, not enough coolant will be retained to cool the engine parts. If the engine of the car is not cooled, it will overheat and you risk further damage to the car parts. An expansion vessel can start to leak due to age. The plastic of the barrel will then become weak and may eventually crack. In most cars this can be recognized by a puddle of coolant under the car. You can see this when you drive away from, for example, the parking garage or when the car is parked on a paved surface. However, on some cars there is a collecting plate mounted under the engine where this leaking coolant is collected. That is why it is important that you continue to check the coolant level and top up if necessary. If the coolant runs out very quickly, there is a chance that the expansion tank, coolant hoses, radiator or water pump are leaking.

Replace expansion vessel

If the expansion tank is leaking, you will have to replace it as soon as possible. Replacing the expansion tank is a relatively easy job that you can do yourself. Always make sure that the car engine is cold when working with the cooling system. Coolant expands when it's hot and can therefore spray out of the tank when you open it after riding.

If you are going to replace the expansion tank, the coolant must first be removed from the tank. You can do this via the tap under the radiator or by removing a radiator hose. When draining, place a container under the radiator in which to collect the coolant. When the coolant has been removed from the tank, all hoses attached to the expansion tank can be disconnected. Loosen the fastener and replace the barrel. All hoses can then be reconnected. Finally, top up the coolant of the car again and close the container with the correct sealing cap.
