Worn timing belt

A timing belt can last between 60,000 and 120,000 km, depending on the type of engine. As you can see, this is a spacious cute, so it's important to inspect the belt regularly and replace it in time. Of course, the belt can also fail earlier. A timing belt needs to be replaced if it is outdated, dried out or cracked. These symptoms can cause the belt to break.

A worn timing belt can be recognized by a number of points. First of all, it is important to perform a visual inspection on a regular basis. During this inspection, do you see any cracks, dents or shreds in the belt or does the belt seem stretched? Then the timing belt definitely needs to be replaced. In addition to seeing a worn belt, you can sometimes hear it. When the belt is stretched, it will sometimes slip while driving and cause a dragging noise. Do you hear this regularly? Then take a look under the hood. It is absolutely not recommended to continue driving with a worn belt. A worn timing belt can snap. If it snaps while driving, there is a good chance that the entire engine will jam. And this can lead to very high costs.

Replace timing belt

If inspection shows that the belt is worn, it will have to be replaced. When you replace the timing belt, we recommend that you replace the water pump immediately. The water pump wears proportionally to the belt. Replacing them at the same time will save you money and time in the future. You can replace a timing belt yourself if you have some technical knowledge. Replacing it yourself will save a lot of money. Replacing a timing belt at a garage can be between € 800 and € 1000. In short it works like this:

Rotate the crankshaft so that it is aligned with the engine block;

Remove all parts around the belt for better access;

Now loosen the tensioner adjusting screws;

Now loosen the belt. Now you can also unscrew and replace the water pump directly. Remove the old gasket residue with a gasket remover.

Now you can put on the new belt. Pay close attention to the markings. The crankshaft marking should point to top dead center. The marking of the camshaft is on the same line as that of the block itself and can often also be recognized by a top dead center marking.

Then set the tensioners correctly and turn the crankshaft twice so that the belt runs taut along the tensioner;

Check that all markings are correct. Then reassemble all parts as before.
