Purpose of a catalytic converter

The catalytic converter ensures that the harmful particles from the engine are converted into less harmful exhaust gases. These are converted into gases such as carbon dioxide, condensed water vapour and nitrogen. The toxic substances are cleaned by the monolith in the catalytic converter. Simply put, this can be seen as a block of ceramic material with a honeycomb structure. The exhaust gases are pushed through the honeycomb structuring, filtering and cleaning the throughput.

Catalytic converter replacement

If the catalyst no longer works sufficiently, the harmful gases will not be converted properly. This is often demonstrated during the MOT test. During the MOT test an exhaust gas test is performed, the 4 gas analysis and emission diagnosis. This test will show whether the catalytic converter in your car is still working adequately or whether it needs to be replaced. Various problems can arise with a catalytic converter. The catalyst can get clogged for example, which will decrease the engine’s power. Moreover, the part can also come off resulting in a rattling sound under the bonnet.

Catalytic converter recycling

Did you know that you can have a broken catalytic converter or soot filter recycled? Be sure not to throw it away without thinking! Recycling the catalytic converter is not only good for the environment, but it can also save you money. Big money, in some cases even up to £ 150. Additionally, up to 80% of the catalyst can be reused. Most of the value for recycling lies in the precious metals used to make the part. This is because these valuable metals are not really used for filtering the exhaust gases, and therefore they are hardly affected.

Catalytic converter

The catalytic converter is an important part of your car's exhaust system. The catalyst makes sure that the amount of harmful and toxic fumes is reduced and that exhaust gases are converted into more Eco-friendly output. It is possible though that the catalyst in your car breaks down, and needs replacement. To make sure that your catalyst still works properly, you can perform a 4 gas analysis and emission diagnosis. The 4-gas diagnosis looks at ratios of different gases. If values are higher or lower than the required minimum or maximum, it’s possible that you need to replace the catalytic converter. This test may also occur during the annual MOT test. At Winparts it´s easy to find suitable parts for your car using your number plate.
