Sheet metal or stainless steel exhaust pipe

Exhaust pipes are either made of sheet metal or stainless steel. The advantage of stainless steel exhaust pipes is that they are a lot more durable than sheet metal exhaust pipes. Sheet metal pipes are often very prone to rust. Hot exhaust gases pass through the exhaust when the car is running. When the car is parked, the exhaust cools down, causing condensation to turn into water, which leads to the sheet metal to oxidize. Rust can eventually result in leakage or tear of the material. A stainless steel exhaust pipe does not rust as quickly and therefore lasts much longer. The chance of defects with a stainless steel exhaust pipe is therefore also a lot smaller.

Replacing an exhaust pipe

Is the exhaust pipe broken? You may choose to have it replaced at your local garage. We strongly recommended though, to order the car part online. Ordering an exhaust pipe can make a huge difference in costs. You can also choose to replace the exhaust pipe yourself. When replacing the exhaust, it is important that you mount it from the front to the rear. If you only want to replace the exhaust pipe, then you need to remove all parts following the mid pipe. If you want to install a new exhaust pipe, you will have to attach it to the manifold. In some cases, you also have to fit the catalytic converter to the exhaust pipe, but often the catalytic converter is already attached to the intermediate pipe. It is also important that you use exhaust paste when installing a new exhaust part. Exhaust paste ensures an air-tight connection, which is very important.

These fumes pass along other parts of the exhaust system, such as the catalytic converter where harmful gases are cleaned.
