Fuel filter

A fuel filter ensures that the fuel is filtered before it gets to the engine. A fuel filter is a filter in the fuel line, so somewhere along with the fuel hose. Fuel filters are both used at petrol and diesel-powered cars and are also called diesel filters for a diesel car. For petrol cars, this is often called a petrol filter.

The fuel that you fill up with at the petrol pump is already filtered, but dirt or rust can still get mixed up with the fuel. The fuel needs to be as pure as possible before it reaches the engine. Without a properly functioning fuel filter, dirt can reach the engine. Dirt and rust particles can cause a lot of damage to, among other things, the fuel pump and fuel injectors. If these car parts fail to work and need replacement, repair costs can be very high. Surely something you want to prevent. To make sure chances are as slim as possible, you need to preventively replace the fuel filter every so often. This way you can ensure that the engine can run as it should. When the filter is due for replacement it can get clogged, which may lead to all other problems such as starting problems and power loss.

Bad fuel filter symptoms

Over time the filtering capabilities of the fuel filter can decrease, it can get clogged and can even get damaged. If a fuel filter is not replaced in time, the fuel will no longer be sufficiently filtered. This can cause the fuel pump and the injection system to fail, which in itself can lead to high repair costs. Bit of a pity when knowing that replacing a fuel filter regularly roughly costs somewhere between £5 to 20. So it is certainly not worth saving on fuel filter replacements. Replacing it regularly pays itself easily back. A failing or clogged fuel filter can be recognized by a number of points.

Decreasing engine power;
A rough idling engine;
Increase in fuel consumption;
Noises from the fuel pump;
The car will not start;
The Check Engine Light is on.

Changing a fuel filter

In general, it is recommended to change a fuel filter every 30,000 miles. If you do not make as many miles, the rule of thumb is to change the fuel filter every 2 years. The diesel filter or petrol filter is also often replaced as part of the major service. You can easily change a fuel filter yourself, it is a small and simple job. Replacing the fuel filter yourself can help save money. Order a cheap petrol or diesel filter at Winparts and it only it will take some time. Of course, it depends on the make and type of car how easy it is to change the filter. Is the petrol filter or diesel filter between the fuel line under the bonnet? Then replacing the fuel filter is easy. The fuel lines are often clicked onto the filter with some kind of clamp, which can easily be removed. Pay attention, fuel might still be in the fuel lines. Be careful not to get this on you or in your eyes. Using a oil drain pan to collect the fuel is recommended. You can then place the new filter the same way.

Fuel filter

Both cars with diesel and petrol engines need a fuel filter. The fuel filter, a part in the fuel line, is used to screen the fuel from unwanted dirt and rust particles. This way it makes sure your fuel is clean when it gets to your engine. Although the fuel which you fill up with has already been filtered, unwanted dirt can nevertheless end up in your fuel tank. If these particles do not properly get filtered, they can get in the engine and may cause damage. Just like an oil filter, pollen filter and air filter, a petrol or diesel filter needs to be periodically replaced
