Indicators are also called blinkers and flashers. The indicator is part of the lighting system of the car and serves several functions. Drivers can use their flashers to show which way they are heading. Indicators are also used to warn your surrounds in the case of a dangerous situation or emergency, or as warning lights for an emergency brake at a traffic jam. They are also part of your car's alarm system to signal danger.

The number of indicators on a car varies, but legally each car needs to have four. The indicators are usually next to the headlights, in the tail lights and on the side of the car. Because it is difficult to see if the lights still work properly while driving, we recommend to regularly check the indicators visually. This is best done together with someone or put the hazard warning lighting on and have a look yourself. Are the indicators defect? Then you need to replace it as soon as possible. By law, working blinkers are a must - you will not pass your MOT or a police safety inspection without them. It needs without saying, they are very important for road safety.

Replacing the indicator light

You may have your blinkers replaced at a garage, but then the bill may add up. A bit of a shame because replacing an indicator is a job that you can easily do yourself. You can of course choose to repair the turn signals, but it is often cheaper to simply purchase new ones. Use the following steps to replace the complete indicator unit. Please note, the method may differ per brand, make and car model.

• First disconnect the "minus" pole of the battery;

• Then remove the housing from the bumper;

• Squeeze the locking connection and remove the wiring;

• Then remove the indicator light and replace it with a new one.
