A pressure sensor sensor measures how full the filter chambers are. If the chambers are too full, the car's electrical system ensures that the temperature of the combustion gases is temporarily raised sharply. The temperature is then raised to about 600 degrees. This process is also known as regeneration. By regenerating the soot filter, the soot particles are burned and converted into ash. Because ash is very small, it can find its way out through the exhaust and there is again room in the particle filter.

When driving only short distances, the car cannot get warm enough to carry out the regeneration process. This can clog the filter.
