Which battery charger to buy?

Battery chargers or trickle chargers are available in various types and sizes. But which battery charger do you need? A lead-acid battery? An intelligent battery charger or a trickle charger? 6 volts, 12 volts or 24 volts? We are happy to explain it to you.

An intelligent car battery charger protects the battery from overcharging. This is necessary to maintain the correct voltage. Because the charger does this itself, this charger is called an intelligent charger. A lead-acid battery works, as the name says, by means of lead-acid. This type has been used for years and is also the simplest method. The battery consists of lead plates, sulfuric acid and water. As soon as the battery discharges, lead sulphate is formed. A lead-acid battery charger is a charger that is suitable for these so-called "wet batteries".

In addition to the car battery chargers that ensure that the battery is fully charged again, there are also trickle chargers. This charger can be permanently attached to the car’s battery and slowly drips into the car battery. Which battery charger is suitable for your car depends mainly on the wishes you have. You can pay attention to a number of points before you purchase a charger.

Pay attention to this

There are a number of things you need to pay attention to when purchasing a battery charger. First of all, you must look for the correct voltage. As already mentioned, there are 3 versions with different voltages; the 6, 12 and 24 volts. The most common voltage for passenger cars is 12V. 24V is usually used with trucks and boats. If you have an old-timer, a 6V charger is often enough. To make sure that you purchase the correct voltage charger, you can also check the battery. The correct voltage is indicated on the battery. The next thing to look at is the capacity, this is also indicated on the battery with Ampere-hour (Ah).

Connect a car battery charger

In most cases, you can charge the battery while it is still in the car. If that doesn’t work, first turn off all the electronics in the car and remove the grounded terminal. It is recommended to clean the battery terminals. Then place the charger away from the battery (as far as possible). Then place the clamps on the battery terminals. Positive (+) is often red and negative (-) is often blue or black. Then turn on the charger at the correct voltage. Now leave the charger alone until the battery is full. For the trickle charger, it applies that it can always remain attached to the car. It drips the battery full when needed.
